In Our City

Where we work. Where we play. Where we live.
Welcome to the Big Apple.

Updates (x 3)

Hi to anyone who reads this blog! It’s been quite a while (precisely about two months and a half) since any of us updated. This is, unfortunately, due to our busy schedules and various vacations… which we will be posting about very, very soon.

But on the bright side, we should up and running again shortly! So you can look forward to updates from all three of us soon.

Alexa

Easy Breasy

March 14, 2012

Today was another Wednesday for us but we’re one short: Alexa is in Atlanta, GA for something that is almost larger than life for a fan girl! (Watch out for that!) Wednesdays are always eventful because we have Hillsong eXchange where the church family takes a break in the middle of a busy week to give praise and worship to the one and only God. It’s always refreshing to hear the Lord’s word especially when your mind is about to get saturated by the hectic and sometimes overwhelming hustle and bustle of New York City life- that is if you are working!  We also try to have dinner out after eXchange so we can get to hang out and enjoy the city a bit more.

Anyway, Jaymee and Pat decided to take advantage of the very nice weather and opted for casual summer-y clothes!

It was too bright and the sun directly overhead cast unflattering shadows on our faces so all we could do is tone down the brightness with a little editing.  So, sorry for the saturated photos!  It’s the only way they could somehow come out decent for posting!

Jaymee’s new cap that she got at the Footlocker store in Times Square, she just couldn’t leave without it!

Pat decided to dress a little like Jaymee today!  If you trade the brown-grey blazer with a black leather jacket and the brown bag with a black one, she would have been a mini Jaymee!

We had lunch at Bryant Park and decided to stop by Sam Ash at 160 W. 48th st. between 6th and 7th avenue.  It’s a huge guitar store where you can play with the instruments for hours.

And we just fell in love with this Martin guitar!  We might be coming back for it in the future!  :)

Some funny photos of us! So that’s all for the day’s photos! After that we decided to get Starbucks and sit on the lawn at Union Square with our friend, Austin, while killing time before Church! We ended up talking about why we go to church.  So basically it all got down to going to church for renewal and finding peace in chaos but in the end, we all agreed that Church as opposed to church is everywhere! And that any time of the day and everywhere is always an opportunity to worship our Lord.

After church we went to our go-to restaurant everytime we have eXchange in the area, Jimmy’s BBQ. Then it was home sweet home to prepare for next exciting day that awaited Jaymee. :) ,

Spring is in the Air

March 12, 2012

Spring has finally arrived! Can’t tell you whether that’s true in an official capacity, but it certainly feels like it - especially when the sun is shining as brightly as it does in these photos. With the beautiful weather and the promise of a great day with our friends at Hillsong NYC, it seemed fitting to dress up.

There’s a beautiful little park near our apartment, complete with a playground and picturesque scenery - perfect for taking outfit photos!

We also met some new friends, who were really curious about what we were up to!

While waiting for our train to arrive, we took advantage of the deserted subway station. Set against a sharp, gritty backdrop, we certainly found ways to stand out!

And of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without some silly pictures!

And, at the end of the night, we brought home some new friends! You’ll probably be seeing more of these guys around the blog.

History Buffs

March 8

Every day gets a little warmer, and our adventurous spirits start awakening (since they’re mostly dormant during cold weather). In celebration of the lovely spring weather and an advanced date for Pat’s birthday (which is coming up on the 20th), we decided to head to the American Museum of Natural History.

History has always been a fascinating area of study - especially when it comes to learning about other cultures. Realizing the diversity of people all over the world is truly eye-opening. Pat, in particular, has always been fascinated by history and culture (and dinosaurs too!), and so it was her special request to go to this particular museum.

[It just so happened that the week prior to this one, when Pat and Alexa visited New Jersey, Alexa’s cousin Clarissa mentioned that her mom, Tita Expay, had also wanted to visit the museum. And so, it turned into an outing of extreme fun!]

First up, everyone met up at Port Authority Bus Terminal - a point of intersection for people from New Jersey and New York (and a couple of other places too!). Taking the subways is second nature to us three, but it was fun accompanying Clarissa and Tita Expay on one of their very few times experiencing it.

We got off at 79th St. and entered an entirely different world. That may be a slight exaggeration, but it certainly looked like a different world - very European, or what we would imagine Europe to be like. It certainly made us wish we had the opportunity to live in the area!

After rounding the corner on 81st St. and walking about two blocks, then making a right, we finally found the museum!

The entrance to the museum from Central Park West is an impressive marble facade, with a statue made in tribute to Theodore Roosevelt. The architecture is reminiscent of something you’d find in countries all over Europe. (Obviously, we’re slightly obsessed with Europe!)

We spent the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon exploring the various exhibits and specimens up for display. It truly is amazing to see how things from millions and millions of years ago have managed to survive (some even intact) and tell the story of what our ancestors from that time did to survive, to celebrate, to live and so on. And it was also fun to see all the animal exhibits!

We took a brief break for lunch and ate in the museum’s food court. Apart from traditional fare, like hot dogs, fries, burgers and chicken strips, there were things like T-Rex burgers (a burger with two patties) and Mud Pies (chocolate pudding with Oreo bits and gummi worms).

And then, after lunch, it was time to see the dinosaurs!

Apart from the dinosaurs, there were some other animals there too - both of the land and the sea.

That’s one thing crossed off Pat & Alexa’s New York City bucket list (which you’ll learn more about in the days to come!)

Sunday Service

Hillsong NYC is a crucial part of our lives these days. We’ve experienced God’s amazing grace in our lives and at church time and again; we feel like we each grow spiritually or get spiritually refreshed every single time we come to a service or Exchange. It’s one of the best churches around and we love it!

It’s also been incredibly wonderful to meet a lot of awesome, talented and genuine people - including our friends Drew, Jonathan, William, Pam, Mike & Eden, who are in the pictures above.

(P.S. If you’re wondering where Pat is, she was at home since she usually works the graveyard shift at the hospital!)

Shop Until You Drop

February 27: The three of us headed to the American Apparel warehouse sale entirely on a whim - and of course we ended up doing some shopping! It’s hard to resist a good deal… or a good dress.

Extra Virgin

Extra Virgin is one of our newer discoveries when it coms to delicious, affordable places to eat. With fare that’s light, tasty and perfectly satisfying, we definitely enjoyed our very first visit back in January for brunch.

(We actually have Daniel Radcliffe to thank for this. He used to frequent the restaurant when he still lived in New York - and because Pat is a big fan, it pretty much was decided that we would visit.)

We had three things for our meal there - oatmeal buttermilk pancakes (which were topped with a delicious assortment of berries), an oregano roasted chicken sandwich (which was slightly dry for our tastes) and smoked salmon and potato tart (which was definitely the highlight of our meal).

All in all, the visit was worth our while and we would definitely recommend visiting Extra Virgin for brunch. You can find out more information about the restaurant on their official website.

Extra Virgin is located at 259 West 4th Street, New York, NY 10014.

A Movie Date

Who knew that the ladies’ room, when designed well, could turn into a pretty cool backdrop for some style photos? This bathroom, located in the AMC Empire 25 movie theater on 42nd Street, has a really cool, dark feel to it.

On this particular day, the three of us got together to watch the 3D release of one of our favorite childhood movies - Beauty and the Beast. The story was still as enchanting as it was all those years ago, only this time we could sing along and know what was coming next.

The Cool Kids

Cool blue and dark neutrals filled our color spectrum for the day. With the sunshine on our faces, but a brisk breeze keeping it a bit chilly, it was still good to be bundled up!
